DSIS News and Updates Week of 9/18/17

Greetings DSIS Community,

Back To School Night – September 19, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:00.  We look forward to seeing you all tonight!

DSIS Climate Committee – The first DSIS Climate Committee will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, September 20th at 8:00 a.m.  The meeting takes place in the Blue room at DSIS.  Please use the entrance by the picnic tables for this meeting as our school is closed at this time.  All students and parents are welcome to attend the Climate Committee meetings.

Gmail for Students & Digital Citizenship - This year DJUSD students will have access to student Gmail through their DJUSD Google Accounts. Students in grades 2-12 will get instruction and support in appropriate and safe use of email as part of our Digital Citizenship work this year.  Student email will be filtered and closely monitored 24 hours per day through a platform called Gaggle. Please visit our new DJUSD Digital Citizenship Website for more information.  DSIS teachers will be working closely with their students during the rollout of the student gmail accounts.

Schoology for Parents – Parent access codes have been emailed to all 7th to 12th grade parents/guardians.  If you did not receive you email and would like to register for a parent account on Schoology, please let me know and I will be happy to help you.  All DSIS students in grades 7th to 12th have most likely accessed Schoology in one of their classes or with their Supervising Teacher.

Bike To School Program – DSIS participates in the Bike/Walk/Skateboard program. We have a kiosk where students check in each time they ride their bike to school.  Contact me in the office for more information.  We would love to get more students involved with this program.

Articulation Day – October 5th – Please note that DSIS will be closing at noon on October 5th so that all DSIS teachers may attend the district articulation.

Safety at DJUSD Schools - Monday, October 16th will be the start of DSIS’ Safety Week. Over the course of that week, students and staff will participate in a series of emergency drills to practice procedures that we would use in an actual urgent situation. As part of that effort, the school district will be sending out a TEST of our Emergency Communication System to the phone numbers, emails and mobile text numbers for emergency contacts for each of our students. The purpose of that “Test Message” is to ensure our parent community understands how, and in what form, you will be messaged in the event of a real emergency and to identify gaps in emergency data that can then be addressed in advance of an urgent event. Important Note For Split Site Parents/Guardians – your student may participate in emergency drills at any of the DJUSD schools that they attend.  Parents/Guardians and Emergency contacts may also receive the emergency alerts for other schools that they attend.  If you receive an automated call, it is very important that you listen to the details so that you can relay any of the information to your children who may be in transit between DJUSD schools.

CONSIDER OPTING IN TO TEXT MESSAGES FOR FUTURE EMERGENCY ALERTS.

If you are new to our school or the school district or haven’t already opted in to receive emergency texts, please consider doing so by texting 67587 from a mobile phone number on record with your student information (on record with our office/included in your online reenrollment.) Learn more about Emergency Texting Service at http://www.djusd.net/txtmsg

As a reminder, all emergency and important automated school communications sent through our SchoolMessenger system will be sent from the number 1877-539-7855.  If you call back this number, you are able to access any recent messages sent to you.  We encourage you to save this number in your Contacts or Caller ID as DJUSD Alert/Message. In this way, you will recognize when an emergency alert or important message is being sent to your phone from our school or school district.

If you have any questions, please contact our office or reach out directly to the DJUSD  Public Information Officer Maria Clayton at mclayton@djusd.net

Important Peanut Allergy Information from the School Nurse:

This letter is to inform you that a student in your child’s school has a severe peanut/nut allergy.  Strict avoidance of ingestion or contact with peanut/nut products is the only way to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction.  We are asking for your assistance in providing a safe school environment for all students.  To reduce the risk of exposure the classrooms and library will be peanut/nut free.  Please do not send any peanut/nut products for your child or others to eat for lunch, snack, or special treats.  If your child has eaten peanuts or nut products before school, please be sure your child’s hands have been thoroughly washed prior to arriving in the classroom.  Thank you for your cooperation.  If you have any concerns or need additional information, please contact me. Sincerely, Laura Bork, RN, BSN School Nurse (Korematsu, Holmes, DSIS)
